Lead seals every junction on a roof: where the tiles meet a wall, round the base of a chimney, down the valleys and across bay tops and dormer cheeks. Fitted right, it lasts for decades. Fitted badly, or in lengths that are too long, it splits as it heats and cools, and the water goes straight in.
