The Victorian and Edwardian terraces of St Albans and Watford were roofed in natural slate, and so were many Victorian streets across the county. A good slate lasts a century or more, but the nails holding it rust out first, and slates start to slide one at a time. Every slipped slate leaves a gap for the rain.
